Though usually there aren't many problems reported in a gastroscopy (endoscopy of the stomach), there may be an occasional complaint. Sometimes, depending on the patient's choice, a mild sedative may also be administered. For the procedure, you may be given a local anesthetic that numbs the back of your throat. The procedure of endoscopy is a relatively quick one. The clasp collects tissue samples for pathological tests. ![]() When a sample is to be collected, a small clasp shaped tool is passed through the endoscope, into the stomach. Within the endoscope, there is also a thin channel, through which other objects can be passed. The video camera records everything for future examination. With the help of the light and the telescope, the stomach can be seen from the inside. The endoscope is passed into the mouth and from there, it is passed into the esophagus and finally into the stomach. The endoscope is a thin, flexible and coiled tool which has a small telescope, light, and a small camera fixed at one end. To look inside your stomach, a tool known as an endoscope is used. These organs are the stomach, esophagus, and the duodenum. The tissue may be taken from any of the organs that form the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. You may also have other restrictions on your activity, including no strenuous activity or heavy lifting. An endoscopy of the stomach, also known as a gastroscopy, is a test where a doctor takes a tissue sample from the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract for testing and examination. A device called a cervical dilator may be needed to stretch the cervical canal if there is tightness (stenosis). The cervix is cleaned with an antiseptic liquid and then grasped with an instrument (tenaculum) to hold the uterus steady. The health care provider will do a pelvic examination, and will insert an instrument (speculum) into the vagina to hold it open and see the cervix. You will lie on your back with your feet in stirrups. You may have some cramping as the instruments enter the uterus and the sample is collected. You may feel some pain when the cervix is grasped. You will want to take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) 1 hour before the procedure to reduce cramping. ![]() There is no special preparation for the biopsy.
